PHARMACOLOGICAL PROPERTIES
Enalapril maleate is the maleate salt of enalapril, a derivative of two aminoacids, L-
alanine and L-proline. It belongs to the group of angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors
(ACE inhibitors). Inhibition of ACE results in decreased plasma angiotensin II, increased
plasma renin activity (removal of negative feedback on renin) and in decreased
aldosterone secretion. The antihypertensive effect of enalapril maleate results primarily
from suppression of the renin-angiotensin-aldosterone system which plays the principal
role in regulation of blood pressure, although enalapril maleate is antihypertensive even
in patients with low-renin hypertension.
USES
Enalapril maleate is used for the treatment of hypertension or heart failure. It is also
used for the prevention of development of heart failure. In many patients with symptoms
of heart failure enalapril maleate delays deterioration of the condition, decreases the
incidence of hospitalization for heart failure, improves survival and quality of life.
INDICATIONS
- essential hypertension of all degrees
- renovascular hypertension
- heart failure of all degrees
- prevention of symptomatic heart failure
- prevention of coronary ischemic incidences in patients with left ventricular dysfunction
