PHARMACOLOGICAL PROPERTIES
Gentamicin sulphate is a broad spectrum bactericidal antibiotic of the
aminoglycoside group. It is readily absorbed and reaches maximum serum
concentrations within 30 - 90 minutes after intramuscular
administration. Effective concentrations in the blood persist for 6 -
8 hours. About 90 % of gentamicin is excreted unchanged in urine by
glomerular filtration.
The spectrum of action of gentamicin sulphate includes
gram-positive and gram-negative bacteria. It acts reliably upon
Pseudomonas aeruginosa, the Klebsiella-Enterobacter-Serratia
group of bacteria, Escherichia coli, indole-positive and
indole-negative strains of proteus, and less reliably upon
Salmonella, Shigella, gonococci and staphylococci including
Staphylococcus aureus.
USES
Gentamicin is used in the treatment of:
- septicemia and neonatal sepsis,
- severe, complicated and recurring infections of the urinary tract, the lower respiratory
tract and the gastrointestinal tract (including peritonitis),
- infections of the skin, bones and soft tissues,
- burn wounds,
- infections of the central nervous system (including meningitis).
Gentamicin sulphate is available in ampoules, vials, ointment,
ophthalmic ointment, and cream.
